CARRILLO, Msgr. Arsenio Sotomayor On April 26, 2017, Msgr. Arsenio Sotomayor Carrillo passed quietly to join our Lord Savior.

"Cheno" was born on April 2, 1930, one of seven children to Guadalupe Sotomayor and Federico Carrillo.

Along with his parents, he is predeceased by his twin sister, baby Maria, both only weighing 2 lbs. at birth, his brother Frank; sister-in-law, Mary and brother, Leo.

He is survived by his sister, Tillie (John) Gallardo; sister-in-law, Emma Carrillo and his brothers, Genaro (Charlotte) and Dr. Tony (Anna) Carrillo. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, all of whom will remember their "Uncle Father" as loving, generous, wise, and most of all, possessing a mischievous sense of humor.

He enjoyed a great passion for Mariachi music, calabasitas, gin martinis, and more than his share of bellotas. Born in Barrio Anita, Arsenio attended Davis Elementary School and Roskruge. At the young age of 14, he chose to study at the Pontifical College Josephinum in "the foreign country" of Columbus, Ohio.

He was ordained a priest on May 26, 1956, returning to Tucson to serve at St. Augustine Cathedral. In 1963 he was named pastor of his home parish, Holy Family Church, until 1968. He enjoyed his service as pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Douglas, Arizona, but then returned to Tucson in 1969 when Bishop Francis Green appointed him Episcopal Vicar for the Spanish speaking people of the Diocese. He was named pastor of St. Augustine Cathedral where he served his beloved community for 40 years.

In 1979, Arsenio was named Honorary Prelate of His Holiness by Pope John Paul II, becoming a Monsignor. He later served as Vicar General under Bishop Manuel Moreno. Throughout his priesthood, he remained the people's priest, serving all and sharing his faith and love to the community, championing the sick, poor, persecuted and lonely.

Arsenio retired from the priesthood in 2002 and continued celebrating Mass for many years thereafter at home and at Our Mother of Sorrows. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to St. Vincent de Paul, the Community Food Bank, or any charitable organization that will help your neighbor. "The day you no longer burn with love, many others will die of the cold."

Visitation will be held Thursday, May 4, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at St. Augustine Cathedral, 192 S. Stone Ave. with a Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered Friday, May 5, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Augustine Cathedral. Interment to follow at Holy Hope Cemetery.
